TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF
If you are seated at a dinner party next to a stranger what three words would you use to describe yourself?
I posed this question on Instagram and am inspired just looking at these amazing responses.
What are your three words?
Mine are “Creative”, “Curious” and “Inquisitive”.
Visually seeing strong words (or quotes for that matter) works on our brains to motivate and energize us, all the while reminding us of our values.
Here’s three ideas for keeping our words in sight so we can be reminded daily of just who the fuck we are:
1) Post your words on the fridge to see them when you grab the yogurt or by your bed when you first wake up. They don’t have to be perfectly stylized pieces. Perfectionism is a buzz kill. Get ‘er done. ‘Post its’ are just fine. They always end up falling off anyway, so months later when you’re on the floor looking for white sock, you spy the word “Fiesty” and fire off a strongly worded email.
2) Take action. If you describe yourself as “Artsy”, do you have a sketchpad and pastels in easy reach, or are they tucked away in a drawer in the basement for when you feel in the mood? (Asking for a friend). If you are a ”Curious” person, try an unfamiliar genre of book, or listening to music you normally bypass, or watching “Stranger Things” at your teenage daughter’s request.
3) Plaster it on a t-shirt. “Fearless AF”, anyone?
Finally take a good look at the words you use to describe yourself. Sometimes we need to add in something new. For years I defined myself as ‘Kind”. I made it a top priority to always filter my actions through kindness. But it began to occur to me that it was often a cover for the proverbial “Nice” label women and girls are taught to embody. I still strive for kind, but sometimes I need to reach for “Assertive”, “Fiery” and even “Demanding”.
Ask a friend or family member to tell you their three words. You will be surprised and delighted with their response.
